History And Business Overview

JAKS Group was established in 1970 by its founder Datuk Ang Ken Seng. Datuk Ang started as a plumber by providing plumbing services to residential premises. Thereon, with the knowledge and expertise in water works, he advanced into water pipe laying for property developers in Klang Valley in the early 1980’s.

In 1987 Datuk Ang incorporated Ang Ken Seng & Sons Sdn Bhd. With this entity, JAKS ventured into medium scale water reticulation works specializing in pipe laying and construction of elevated tanks. JAKS had completed several projects for Jabatan Bekalan Air Selangor, IJM Corporation, PATI, Kulim Enterprise Sdn Bhd and Kien Tat Enterprise Sdn Bhd.

Pipe Technology System Sdn Bhd (PTS) was incorporated in 1992 and the factory was set up on a 7 acres land in Bentong, Pahang which was completed only in 1995. PTS commenced its operation in 1996. PTS was initiated by the Ang’s family with the objective of fulfilling the needs to have an in-house manufacturing facility in order to reduce JAKS Group’s dependency on external suppliers. PTS manufactures pipes from the range of 100 mm to 1800 mm diameters. PTS is capable of manufacturing up to 40,000 tonnes per annum at maximum capacity.

In 1998, the Ang family invited Dato’ Jamian Mohamad to participate in their shareholdings and subsequently the company’s name was changed to JAKS Sdn Bhd. Since then, JAKS had embarked into a large scale of business by securing more pipe laying and reservoir contracts. Besides that, JAKS had also embarked into designing and construction of sewerage treatment facilities as well as other civil and building related works.

On March 2001, JAKS had made a conceptual proposal to the State Planning and Development Unit of Selangor to become the long term pipe supplier for the State. This idea was accepted by the Selangor State and therefore a joint venture company named JAKS – KDEB was incorporated between JAKS Sdn Bhd and Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Berhad (KDEB), an investment arm of the State Government of Selangor. This joint venture company, JKC, is 70% owned by JAKS Sdn Bhd where else the other 30% equity is held by Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Bhd. On 25th October 2001 the company had secured a 10 years contract with the State Government of Selangor to design, testing, manufacturing and supplying pipes and fittings such as tees, bends, tapers, collars, mechanical joints required by the State Government of Selangor, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur.

Integrated Pipe Industries Sdn Bhd (IPI) was incorporated in March 2002. IPI has been involved in the manufacturing of mild steel pipes and fittings. The objective of setting up this plant is to cater for the demand of pipes required by the State Government of Selangor. Besides catering for this requirement, IPI is also in the position to facilitate and support JAKS construction division. IPI has embarked on a modern and advance factory by adopting Germany’s latest state of art and technology, providing various sizes of pipes ranging from the smallest size of 200 mm to the largest size of 3000 mm in diameter. The operation is spiral in nature, automatic, electronically control and is equipped with TV camera sensor monitor system, hydraulic control system and automatic welding. Apart from manufacturing facilities, the plant also provides additional features, i.e. testing machine, X-ray station and lab equipment in order to provide assurance that the finished product is defect free. It has capabilities of manufacturing up to 100,000 tones of mild steel pipes per annum at maximum capacity.

On 1st July 2004, JAKS Group had successfully implemented a corporate exercise to acquired Wing Tiek Steel Pipe Sdn Bhd (now known as JAKS Steel Industries Sdn Bhd) and subsequently transferred the listing status of its holding company Wing Tiek Holdings Bhd to JAKS Resources Berhad. This has allowed JAKS Resources Berhad to be listed on the main Board of Bursa Malaysia.

With the listing of JAKS Group in the main Board of Bursa Malaysia, JAKS Resources Berhad has grown bigger and expanded into big infrastructural projects, property development and trading of construction and steel related products in both domestic and international market.

Since then, the Group has gained a market position and reputation as a leader in the integrated water resources management industry with manufacturing arm supplying varies sizes of pipes ranging from the smallest size of 200mm to the larges size of 3000mm in diameter. Its in-house Construction Division has also expanded to undertake all type of water related construction and big infrastructure projects locally and internationally.

Over the years, the Group has transformed itself to meet challenges of a highly competitive economy while seizing the opportunity of tomorrow.

Currently, the Group is embarking on a business transformation plan shifting its focus from manufacturing, trading and construction to property and power project development as new growth areas.

The Group has ventured into larger-scale properties development to construct the mixed residential and commercial development project strategically located at Ara Damansara and also at Section 13 in Petaling Jaya. A few strategic land in USJ1 will also be developed in the coming future.

On the international front, the Group is diversifying into energy and other large scale infrastructure projects. The strategy to invest overseas is to safeguard against any cyclical local business of the steel manufacturing and construction activities.
